I need help on a Vermont blinker (directional signal) question? I got pulled over the other day for not using my turn signal and ticketed for that and other things yet I don't think it's legal for him to pull me over and if thats so I get all the fines removed. All the vermont DMV says a bout it is the following.. § 1249. Directional signal lamps A person shall not operate on a highway in this state a pleasure car, pleasure car with trailer coach attached, motor truck, truck-tractor in combination with a trailer or semi-trailer, motor bus, or school bus registered in Vermont, manufactured or assembled after January 1, 1955, unless such vehicle is equipped with directional signal lamps, of a type approved by the commissioner, on front and rear of such vehicle or combination. (Amended 1971, No. 228 (Adj. Sess.), § 32.) I was not operation my vehicle on a state highway.

Travis S replied: "Not sure about Vermont laws, but you could probably fight it and win. You may not have been on "state highway" but the above says " a highway in this state" which by law is probably any roadway."

Sharon S replied: "Title 23, Sections 1064 and 1065 of the Vermont Statutes says that you are required by law to use your vehicle's turn signal or a hand signal when about to turn. It even says you must use the signal during the final 100 feet traveled before the turn is made! § 1064: § 1065: If you are a licensed Vermont driver, you might also get 2 violation points on your record for not signaling, according to this chart: In 2006, a driver argued that he didn't have to signal his intention to turn if no one was around to see his signal. Read this entire case (only four paragraphs long) in which a Vermont court decides that an officer *did* have the right to pull over this driver: It appears that it was legal for the officer to pull you over. Sorry!"

lovesamystery32 replied: "Most of the main roads in this state are considered highways. Rt. 7, Rt. 15, Rt. 2 - they're all highways. The interstate is the interstate. That said, it is in the laws that not using your directional is a ticketable offense and comes with a hefty fine if I remember. I think the newspaper said it tops $150 usually. If you live in the area, it's been all over the news that the police were going to start cracking down on those who do not use their directionals. Personally, I'm all for it. I had a teen a few days ago who cut me off in heavy traffic outside the mall. Had he had his directional on, I may have been able to allow him in. Instead, it cause me to have to slam on my brakes and that cause drivers behind me to have to do the same. Thankfully, no one collided."

Is an Oregon drivers license legal in Vermont? I live in both states, however if I get my license in Vermont I must wait 4 months. I can get an Oregon license right now, but I don't know if that license will be legal in Vermont. I have looked on various DMV sites, but none of the FAQs answer the question. Can anyone shed some light on this? The reason for waiting 4 months is that I waited for 7 months to get my permit after turning 15, and there is a law that states that you must wait 1 full year after getting the permit until you can get the license. I am of age and have no bad record. Bullshit laws though.

Seth D replied: "no, if you plan on driving in any other state you need to get a license in that state. not really... yes it is legal. if you have an oregon license it is legal in vermont, however im not sure what registration laws are, these depend on how long you reside in a state. i know california requires you to register your car in california within two weeks of moving here or as soon as you accept a job."

shoredude2 replied: "You don't elaorate on why you have to wait 4 months in Vermont. If it's because you're too young to get a license in Vermont or have a suspended license there, you're not going to be able to drive there anyway."

How to buy car without a title in California (CA)? Have a car available from a friend for purchase, but the current owner does not have a title and is not able to get me a duplicate title (is busy and does not want to spend time at DMV). The car was originally registered in Vermont and now in California. It was never registered in California and has expired plates for almost 5 years from Vermont.

spot replied: "It means the title is still with Vermont DMV. You should not buy the car without the actual paper title in your hand. Why don't you contact the DMV in Vermont and ask what the procedure is for getting a title. Usually you write a letter and pay for it. They will send him the title in mail. If he doesn't have time, you can write the letter for him. Once he sign the title over to you, you can take it CA DMV and register."

oklatom replied: "Of course he doesn't have 'time' to do all that, since it's been expired and never checked or transferred to California with all that entails. Who ever attempts to register the vehicle now will pay all the penalties over the past 5 years. After that, and before it can ever be registered in California it will have to pass smog and get a certificate. And how do you know it even has a clear title? Perhaps some finance company is looking for it, and the minute it shows up as a running and registered vehicle, the repo truck will roll. With a good and clear title I'd hesitate on this one, without a title, RUN AWAY. Fast!"

Pedro S replied: "NEVER pay a penny until you have a clean [no leans] title in your grubby little hand.....or go through hell and maybe lose your money...."

J.R. replied: "Either call Vermont and arrange for a title yourself, or don't buy the car. Older cars can be sold on a bill of sale in some states; you would then take the bill of sale to the DMV to register it and get a title. However, as was said above, be very sure that there is no lien against the car. You could be wasting your money."

Can I drive my new car home with no registration? We're about to go buy a car--can we drive it home (In Vermont ) with no registration (it's Sunday, DMV is closed..)?? We're buying it as a second winter vehicle, it's a personal sale, not from a dealership.

Maryn Bittner replied: "No! If some bozo hits you, you'll be in serious trouble. Time to defer gratification and not pick it up until registration is complete. Often the car dealer can take care of that for you."

armyjim_2000 replied: "I am assuming that your state (Vermont) is like most others. If it is, the dealer should give you a temporary tag to allow you to take your new vehicle home. Most places allow you to drive for a limited amount of time (usually a month or longer) on temporary tags."

dymond replied: "If you are buying it from a dealer you will have 20 days to get it registered .You can drive during that time period-however if you are buying it from a private person you wont get a sticker to drive on so no you wont be legal"

Ms. X replied: "In California, the dealer gives you a temporary registration paper, so you're never driving w/o registration. I assume Vermont does the same."

Tina F replied: "No registration = No drive"

I am a legal immigrant. How can I get my drivers licence? I have a legal permit to work in USA. Right now I'm waiting for my visa renewal, but due to the changes of office location from Texas to Vermont, the papers are processing very late. I currently live in Florida and the DMV in here does not allow me to have a temporary drivers licence until my visa decision. So I can't drive to work because of this..Can you please suggest me a state where I can go and get a drivers licence for a non-US citizen (pending)? Thank you

Dexter replied: "just go to a dmv, you will take 2 tests i think, a written one and the one where you actually drive, if u pass, u get your license!"

Antis Suck replied: "Ride public transportation to work or just drive without your license. If you can find make your way to California, they will give you a drivers license. They give them to everyone. I don't know where else though."

~Fly-Over Country~ replied: "Arizona will give you one. Thank you for being here legally :) Arizona resident."

DAR replied: "If you have a valid social security number under your work permit, a number of states will."

Mamapeapod replied: "I think you need a DL for the state you live in. What country are you from? some DL's you are allowed to drive on for up to one year after entering the US."

aintlifegrand replied: "If you are legal all Western States will let you get a drivers license. I am sorry you are going through this problem. Especially since you are doing it the legal way they should be quicker about it."

Cali4niaGirl replied: "Georgia. One of my relatives is in the same position."

tm99 replied: "do you have a social security number? usually you definitely need a ss# to get the license. In NY, in addition to ss#, you would need stuff like bank card, current utility bill, valid passport, major credit cards, etc.....to get enough points. Good luck."

I want to buy a motorcycle out of state, how do I go about this? I'm 18, live in Massachusetts, and have to do this all completely on my own. I'm considering buying a bike from NH, Vermont, or Maine and driving it back home since bikes seem to be much cheaper up there. I just don't know how to go about this with the DMV, how much fees are, etc.

not 2 B fooled replied: "Go to the state website for the DMV - for answers"

fire4511 replied: "Because you live in Mass, you are subject to some strange insurance laws. What you will need to do is to buy the bike, bring the paperwork to your insurance company, and get your insurance paperwork from them. You can then either pay the insurance company to send a runner to the Registry of Motor Vehicles, or you can go there yourself and get your tags. Only after tags are issued is the insurance in effect. You than take the tags with you back to pick up the bike. If the dealer can issue you temporary tags, you would have to buy insurance to cover you from a non Mass company, until you got back home. Normally (if you lived in most other states) the dealer could issue you a temporary tag, you could call and add the bike to your insurance, and then you could go to the Motor vehicle office to get your title and permanent tags. Mass insurance law requires that the tags be issued and valid or the insurance does not cover you."

racemaster replied: "just read the small book they gave you 1 time cover to cover and you will pass"

politicallycorrerect replied: "Try reading the Vehicle Code."

Warnings versus tickets - Vermont? A friend of mine was pulled over last week for speeding. He's been driving since he was 18 (so thirty years now) and has had 1 ticket for pushing a red light when he was 20. 16 years ago he was pulled over for speeding and was ticketed. 10 years ago he received one written warning. 7 1/2 years ago he received another written warning. His record has been clean since. Anyway, last week he was pulled over and ticketed for speeding. The officer told him because he had two warnings that it was "time for an expensive lesson." I thought warnings came off your record. Now there is some debate, per the VT DMV, warnings do not go on your DMV record at all. They think they only go on your police record - there are apparently two records that the police check when they pull you over. They told me that warnings can stay on your police record indefinitely. Now I'm confused, does anyone know the true legalities of warnings in VT?

Tony D replied: "I can't speak for VT, but here in FL, to my knowledge, warnings are not monitored by the DMV. Each agency handles any tracking of their warnings. With that considered, an agency or officer within it can use the information available to them (whether it be from the DMV or in-house records) to make a decision on whether to cite. I'm just surprised their system goes back as far as 10 years on something that's as minor as a traffic warning."

changing license.? My friend did have a vermont lisence but he got it taken away a couple years ago and hes been driving without and getting pulled over and put in lock up for the weekend. If he moves down here to North Carolina can he go to the DMV and get a NC drivers lisence with no points and a new slate? or will the dmv look at the vermont history and not allow him to have a nc license? The kid has good intentions he is 21 just needs to get away from his old habbits... Please Help.. thanks, avafan

wizjp replied: "They start with his Vermont history and base conditions on that."
